Jay-Z Changes Profile Picture to CryptoPunk NFT as he Auctions NFT of his Debut Album at Sotheby’s

Popular rapper Jay-Z has changed his Twitter profile picture to CryptoPunk NFTs, exposing his 3 million followers to the exploding and exciting world of non-fungible tokens.

CryptoPunk is a popular collection of a limited 10,000 NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain that was first released by Larva Labs in 2017 but gained traction this year as NFTs went mainstream.

CryptoPunk #6095, which is the profile picture of Jay-Z, is male with wild hair and features a gold chain, both relatively rare traits that add value to the punk. It was sold in late April for 55 ETH, worth $126,000 at the time.

Recently, Sotheby’s sold the most expensive CryptoPunk to date at $11.8 million, which was a rare CryptoPunk alien.

This CryptoPunk avatar came after Jay-Z set up his first NFT sale with auction house Sotheby’s.

The NFT being auctioned is based on his debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt” released in 1996, for which Jay-Z worked with digital artist Derrick Adams to create a one-of-one animated digital collectible meant to “recontextualize” the album cover.

Called Heir to the Throne, the image in the NFT was inspired by Jay-Z ‘s and Adams’s experiences with “life in the urban streets.

Besides being available at Sotheby’s New York, the NFT will also be exhibited virtually in Sotheby’s gallery in Decentraland.

The sale of the NFT will run until July 2, with bidding to begin at $1,000. Buyers have the option to pay in Ether (ETH), Bitcoin (BTC), or fiat currencies. Sotheby’s crypto purchases are facilitated through Coinbase Commerce.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Shawn Carter Foundation, which gives scholarships to individuals from low-income backgrounds and helps them with their post-secondary education.

According to trader CL of Girl Capital, with the kind of attraction NFTs is getting, “people will realize NFTs are probably the biggest penetration into mainstream than anything else crypto ever had” due to the fact that it allows “normies to make money…(and) many people don’t like to bet on price.”

The reason they grab so much media and mass attention is a mix of factors, including people already spending all their attention online every day, NFT enabling content scarcity and ownership, and some of these NFTs costing a lot, he added.

Jay-Z NFT Goes On Sale at Sotheby’s – This Time, Approved by Jay-Z

Jay-Z NFT Goes On Sale at Sotheby’s – This Time, Approved by Jay-Z

An attempted sale of rapper Jay-Z’s debut album Reasonable Doubt as an NFT was recently stopped by the US District Court of New York.

As one of the owners of Jay-Z’s label Roc-A-Fella Records, Damon Dash allegedly attempted to sell a tokenised version of the album. However, Dash stated he was only selling his stake in the company.

No More Doubt About Reasonable Doubt NFT

In any case, NFT artworks of the Reasonable Doubt album will be going on sale at Sotheby’s – this time with the approval of Jay-Z himself.

From June 25, Sotheby’s put up for auction an NFT commemorating the album, just in time for its 25th anniversary. Bidding starts at $1000 and will continue until July 2.

An undisclosed percentage of the sale proceeds will go to the Shawn Carter Foundation, an organisation that provides scholarships to low-income and at-risk students.

The artwork is called “Heir to the Throne” – which was reportedly the original name of the album in its early stages of conception. The artwork was created by Brooklyn-based Afro-American artist and curator Derrick Adams, who has maintained a long professional relationship with Jay-Z.

Over the years Jay has collected and supported my work and so this collaboration is particularly fulfilling. With this NFT project, we jointly embrace the opportunity to further the conversation about how artists of different mediums contribute to a more inclusive society. Jay’s album Reasonable Doubt changed the game 25 years ago, and continues to influence so many of us.

This NFT is the first to be created by Adams – and the first to be sold by Jay-Z. The artwork can be viewed at Sotheby’s Decentraland art gallery.

Jay-Z among Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees

Rapper Jay-Z, 1980s pop group The Go-Gos and rock band Foo Fighters were among first-time nominees announced on Wednesday for possible induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Others on the ballot for the first time include singer-songwriter Carole King and singer-actress Dionne Warwick, heavy metal group Iron Maiden, and the late Nigerian singer Fela Kuti.

The 16 contenders also included previous nominees Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, Devo, LL Cool J and Todd Rundgren. Performers become eligible 25 years after their first commercial release.

King was nominated for her work as a performer. She was previously inducted as a songwriter with Gerry Coffin.

Turner’s nomination was for her solo work. She had been honored for duo Ike and Tina Turner.

Inductees will be selected based on ballots sent by the Cleveland-based Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry.

The general public also can weigh in online or at the Rock Hall. The top five vote-getters will be submitted as a single fan ballot among the hundreds of other ballots.

Those selected will be announced in May and inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Cleveland in the fall. In previous years, between five and seven acts have typically won a place in the Hall…Reuters

The multi-hyphenate rapper and the luxury goods giant have agreed into a partnership to take the prestige cuvee to greater heights

Wherever Jay-Z and Beyoncé are quarantining right now, they must be popping the champagne as luxury goods giant LVMH has announced that it has acquired a 50 per cent stake in the Armand de Brignac champagne brand, which is owned by the multi-hyphenate rapper.

The partnership was to be expected especially with how the prestigious champagne (also known as the “Ace of Spades”) has been reinventing the champagne category with its unprecedented innovation and energy. In fact, its global success has seen the brand selling over 500,000 bottles in 2019 in the North American, Asian and European markets.

Philippe Schaus, the President and CEO of Moët Hennessy (under the LVMH group), said in a statement that the group has been following the tremendous success of Armand de Brignac for years. He added: “Armand de Brignac breaks barriers and reflects contemporary luxury, while preserving the traditions of the Champagne terroirs.”

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the partnership is based on Moët Hennessy’s equal ownership of Armand de Brignac and its global distribution. The 50-50 structure ensures that both parties can bring their strengths and expertise for the continued success of the long-term alliance.

“This partnership has felt familiar the entire time,” confessed Jay-Z, who is confident that Moët Hennessy global distribution framework, portfolio strength and track record in luxury brands will give Armand de Brignac a bigger platform to “grow and flourish even further”.
